Weekly Updates/Reflections

Week 1
During this week, we were introduced to the module's requirements and our design focus.
The theme was "Nottingham". Our tutor gave discussions about the ways we could find inspiration from the many sights and experiences Nottingham has to offer.
Week 2
Further initial research was done during this week. I decided to look back at the places i had visited earlier during the first and second terms. Places like Wollaton Park, Attenborough Nature reserve, and Nottingham Castle came to mind.
Week 3
After doing research and finding ideas online, I decided to narrow down my area of focus to birds and Nottingham. Namely birdhouses and bird feeders.
Week 4
During this week, I sketched some initial designs to find what interesting ideas i could come up with.
Week 5
During this week, we had a design presentation and critique session. I decided to show one of my more developed designs at the time to receive useful feedback on my design. Overall i think the session was useful as it allowed me to gauge how appealing my peers thought my design was. The session also allowed me to pinpoint flaws in my design; in this case, it was the protruding "perch" that I initially thought was a good idea. One of my classmates inquired whether the perch was actually practical which led me to rethink and refine my design.

Week 6
During this week i decided to continue on with experimenting on my design from the previous week. I wanted to test whether it would even be feasible to model. I ultimately decided to scrap the design as the modeling process would be too complicated besides the majors flaws the design already had that were pointed out during my critique session.

Week 7
In this week we were given the opportunity to attend the design grad show at NTU. I found this experience to be very useful as it allowed me to get a better view of what would be expected of me once I progress into my university course. Unfortunately i was unable to post photographs of graduate work I particularly liked due to being unable to extract the photos from my phone.
Week 8
During this week I spent my time thinking of a new design to replace the one I had scrapped a few weeks earlier. I looked online for inspiration as well as real life things I found interesting in my visits around Nottingham.

Week 9
In this week we were expected to narrow down our designs to allow us enough time to develop and model. I decided to focus on this design as I really liked its general aesthetic; it created an interesting contrast between a round dome and a flat square back panel.

Week 10
This week was one of the finals weeks we had to finish our designs/models. I decided to use a combination of cardboard, a found stick, and paper mache made of kraft paper. As they were readily available to me and were an easy, flexible medium to work with.
Week 11
This was the final week in which we were expected to hand in our final work by its end. I finished my Model (modelling process can be found in my feed) with varying results although in general it ended well.
